Safe & Thorough Hearing Tests

I carry out adult hearing tests at my clinic in Leamington Spa. I am a CQC registered audiologist, and I see patients from Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon and Southam. A hearing test shows how well you hear, whether there is a hearing loss and what, if anything, to do about it. On this page I explain when to book a test, what happens at the appointment and what comes after.

Our Hearing Test Process

When should I have a hearing test?

Hearing loss usually comes on gradually, so many people do not notice it until someone else points it out. Common signs include:

Turning the TV up louder than other people find comfortable
Finding it hard to follow conversations in busy places such as pubs and restaurants
Struggling to hear on the phone
Often asking people to repeat themselves
Family or friends saying you do not listen
Feeling that people mumble

If you also hear ringing, whistling or whooshing in your ears, that could be tinnitus, which is often linked to hearing loss. A hearing test is the right place to start.

Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears needs urgent attention. Contact your GP or call NHS 111 straight away rather than booking a routine test.

What happens at the appointment?

I start by asking about your hearing, your general health and any ear problems you have had, and I look inside your ears. I then carry out the tests that suit you.

Most hearing tests include some or all of these:

Pure tone audiometry. You listen to sounds through headphones and press a button each time you hear one. This finds the quietest sounds you can hear.
Speech testing. This works in a similar way, but you listen to speech instead of tones.
Tympanometry. A small device in the ear checks how well your eardrum moves and whether a blockage behind it might be affecting your hearing.

If wax is blocking your ear canal, it can affect your results. I also offer ear wax removal, and I will talk you through it if it is needed.

What happens after the test?

I explain your results in plain language and tell you what they mean for you. If your hearing is normal, you will know where you stand. If there is a hearing loss, I will explain what I found and talk you through your options, which may include hearing aids. If I think something needs a medical opinion, I will tell you and suggest you speak to your GP.

How can I prepare?

Bring a list of any medicines you take, and tell me about any ear infections, ear surgery, tinnitus or family history of hearing loss. If you wear hearing aids, bring them with you. If it helps, bring a family member or friend, as they often notice things about your hearing that you do not.

I am an audiologist with a BSc in Speech and Language/Audiology (Honours) and an MSc in Advanced Audiology. I have more than 16 years of experience in UK teaching hospitals and have taught audiology at UCL’s Ear Institute and Aston University.

My daughter had problems with blocked ears for quite some time, which caused her to have some hearing problems. Been to the GP over the years and they always said her ears are just blocked and prescribed ear drops every time, which didn’t help so we decided to see a specialist. And boy did I wish I had done this sooner.

Carolina was very friendly and professional, and with undeniable patience. She showed us just how blocked my daughter’s ears were. And not just the one side but BOTH, which the doctors never mentioned. Of course this has been going on for some years so there was quite the build up, which took Carolina a few attempts to get all the blockage out. But she did it! And for the first time in god knows how long, my daughter could actually hear properly. (I’ll never forget her face) Carolina was so courteous and caring of how my daughter felt. I can’t thank her enough.

I met Carolina at an event earlier this year and was really impressed by her friendly approach, her professional background, and the way she explained how hearing isn’t just about sound - it also affects your relationships and quality of life.
