Safe & Thorough Child Hearing Tests
I carry out hearing tests for children from age 3 upwards at my clinic in Leamington Spa. I am a CQC registered audiologist, and I see families from Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon and Southam.
A hearing test shows how well your child is hearing and whether anything needs following up. On this page I explain when a test is worth booking, what happens at the appointment and how you can prepare your child.
Our Child Hearing Test Process
When should my child have a hearing test?
You do not need a reason to book. If you have a worry about your child’s hearing, a test gives you a clear answer. Signs that parents often notice include:
- Not responding when their name is called
- Needing things repeated
- Struggling to follow a conversation in a noisy room or from a distance
- Speech that is delayed or unclear for their age
- Seeming unusually tired or irritable, because listening takes extra effort
- Finding it hard to meet learning goals at school
Glue ear is a common childhood condition where the middle ear fills with fluid, and hearing loss is its most common sign. A hearing test can show whether your child’s hearing is affected. If I think glue ear could be the cause, I will explain why and suggest you speak to your GP.
Ear wax can also affect hearing. If I find wax in your child’s ear canals, I can talk you through ear wax removal, which I also offer for children from age 3 upwards.
What happens at the appointment?
I start by asking about your child’s hearing, speech and ear health, and I look inside their ears. I then carry out the test that suits your child’s age and how they respond on the day.
For younger children the test is play based. Your child listens for sounds through headphones and does a simple task each time they hear one, such as putting a block on a tower. I change the volume and pitch to find the quietest sounds they can hear in each ear. Older children can respond by pressing a button instead.
I may also check how the eardrum is moving, using a soft tip placed at the ear. Your child does not need to respond for this part.
The test is not painful, and I explain each step to your child in simple terms as we go.
How can I prepare my child?
Tell your child in simple terms that they will be playing a listening game with headphones and that someone will look in their ears. If you can, bring only the adults your child needs and leave other children at home, as this keeps background noise down.
It helps me to know about any ear infections, your child’s speech development, any previous hearing tests and any family history of hearing problems. Bring any details you have with you.
What happens after the test?
I explain the results in plain language and tell you what they mean for your child. If the results are normal, you will know your child is hearing as they should. If they show a hearing difficulty, I will explain what I found and suggest the right next step, which may be a referral through your GP.

I am an audiologist with a BSc in Speech and Language/Audiology (Honours) and an MSc in Advanced Audiology. I have more than 16 years of experience in UK teaching hospitals and have taught audiology at UCL’s Ear Institute and Aston University.
